A Year in Review

Favourite New to Me Authors 2016

Every year as readers, we discover new authors whose books make us wanna read their entire back catalogue. Books that have blown you away, that you vow to read every book that they have ever written and every book they will ever write. And that is the list I want to share with you today; all my favourite authors that I have found in 2016.

Let’s get on with it. 😉

10. Robin Talley

While I’ve only read one book by Robin Talley, I will definitely be picking up more from her in the future. The Lies We Tell Ourselves was such a powerful novel. It was so raw and at times very hard to read, but that’s what made it such a great book. It’s also own voices, which made my reading experience all the more richer.

9. Marie Rutkoski

I adored The Winner’s Trilogy by Marie Rutkoski when I read it back in March. I was not expecting to love her work as much as I do, but now I’ll read anything this woman writes. She has this way with words that fully grabs your attention. I’m SO unbelievably excited for when her new release finally drops.

8. Sabaa Tahir

An Ember in the Ashes was ridiculously popular last year, and ever since then I have been intrigued by this hyped up book. And so I gave it a go, and damn was it good. Both books in her series were a ride from start to finish. There’s always something going on and Sabaa Tahir doesn’t let up one bit. I’m so glad I gave into the hype, because its become one of my favourite on-going series. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

7. Ruta Sepetys

I’d always heard great things about Ruta Sepetys. So when I saw Between Shades of Gray for really cheap on kindle, I thought I’d give her a chance. And my, was I blown away. What I love the most about her books, is how she’s able to capture emotions. She is also one hell of a writer. Definitely suggest checking out her work. You won’t regret it (I promise).

6. Libba Bray

I absolutely fell in love with Libba Bray this year. Her Diviners series completely sucked me in and it was all I could talk about. It was also the books that converted me to the idea of audiobooks (I never thought it’d be for me). Her gorgeous, atmospheric writing and diverse characters made her an automatic auto-buy. I’ll definitely be picking up more of her books next year. The Gemma Doyle Trilogy will probably be the next book I read from her.

5. Erika Johansen

I’ve only very recently discovered my love for Erika Johansen. She became a fast favourite when I read The Queen of the Tearling back in November. It was obvious she’d make it onto this list, because I’ve become kinda crazy about her books. And now that I’m almost done with her The Queen of the Tearling trilogy, I can’t wait for her to publish more books I can sink my teeth into.

4. Maggie Stiefvater

With the final book of The Raven Cycle series being released in 2016, I thought it was finally time I start it. I can’t begin to express to you how much I ADORE this series. Up until that point, it had been a minute since I read a book series that has wholly captivated me. And for someone who doesn’t binge read series (TRC is one of two series I’ve marathoned), I pretty much read all these back to back. I can’t recommend this series enough. Pick it up if you haven’t already. You can thank me later. 😂

3. V.E. Schwab

Early on this year, I discovered the wonderfulness that is V.E. Schwab. I have become obsessed with her characters and her lush writing. I’ve read three books by her and each new release is better than the last, which just make me giddy with what else she has up her sleeve.

2. Scott Lynch

What I love the most about Scott Lynch’s books is his juicy stories and memorable characters. Every few days or so I’ll remember a funny quip Locke said in one of the books and I’m reminded again why I am utterly in love with them. It’s one of those books I know I’ll frequently re-read throughout my life. Please go read The Lies of Locke Lamora, I guarantee it’ll change your life for the better.

1. Robin Hobb

The love affair with Robin Hobb began with the Assassin’s Apprentice, and I haven’t looked back since. 2016 has without a doubt been the year of Hobb for me. I’ve read two of her trilogies now, and she’s cemented her herself as one of my top auto-buy authors. Everything about her books is spectacular, from her gorgeous writing to her insanely rich characters. This woman is a damn genius and she continually amazes me with her ability to think of these fantastic plots that are combined with such detailed world-building. I don’t know where I would be if hadn’t read Assassin’s Apprentice. There are no words to convey how deeply I love her books.

There you have it. All the authors that have really stood out to me this year.

Have you found any new favourites?

As always, thanks for reading.

Marian

    1. The hype severely got to me too with An Ember in the Ashes. I was so scared to read it, but I (thankfully) ended up really enjoying it. All can say to hopefully sway you to picking it up, is that its well-written, the characters are really interesting to read from and the plot is ridiculously fast-paced. It’s perfect if you’re looking for a quick YA fantasy. 😄

I’m so glad I found Robin Hobb, Erika Johansen and Scott Lynch this year. Their books have been amazing. 🙌
